Utica High School students gathered on Monday to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. through a day of service.

More than 50 Utica High School students gathered in the school cafeteria to take part in a series of service projects.

“We are using this day off to do activities that give back to the community,” said one of the organizers, senior Megan Walker.

Walker said the students set up a series of stations in the cafeteria that were aimed at supporting community groups.

The projects included:

-Twenty three Project Linus Blankets for seriously ill children
-Fleece Hats for foster children
-Paracord Bracelets for first responders
-A poetry contest based on the following quote by Dr. King: “We must discover the power of love, and when we do that, we will make of this old world a new world, for love is the only way. There is power in love.”
-Sorting canned foods for Gleaner’s Food Bank. UHS was a Gleaners Food Bank drop-off for non-perishable foods and canned goods.

"I feel that all of us coming together and helping others is what this day is all about," said senior Celestina Marogi.
