Former UHS valedictorian earns national honors in college sales competition

Tyler Newton with award winning Bowling Green teamA former Utica Community Schools Career and Technical Macomb County student of the year has been honored nationally in a college sales competition.

Utica High School graduate Tyler Newton was a participant on the Bowling Green Sale Team that recently placed fourth at the National Collegiate Sales Competition. 

More than 130 top sales students from over 65 universities participated in the competition hosted by Kennesaw State University’s Michael J. Coles College of Business. Students competed in team-based and one-on-one sales call simulations. Sophia Barnes and Tyler Newton comprised the BGSU Sales Team. This is the second highest finish BGSU has had in the NCSC, behind winning the competition in 2010.

A school valedictorian who graduated in 2017, Newton was named a Student of the Year by the Macomb County the Macomb County Career Technical Education Administrators Association.

"Tyler is an exemplary role model both in and out of the classroom" UHS staff wrote in his nomination. "He is leaving behind a legacy of hard work, compassion and friendship."

His activities at Utica High School included school store management in a year when the Chief Connection was again recognized as one of the nation’s best, participating in the school's DECA chapter and serving as captain of the school's cross-country team.
